Self-Portrait was established in 2013 by Han Chong in London, with a creative vision to make beautiful design accessible to all women.
Having trained at Central Saint Martins, the Malaysian-born designer unites a refined aesthetic with a deft understanding of structure and materials that has propelled the brand’s meteoric rise and upended the contemporary fashion market.
Designed in London, made for the world - Self-Portrait believes in celebrating and empowering the women in the clothes. Femininity ensured by elegant functionality, reflecting a sincere engagement and appreciation for a contemporary way of life.
HAN CHONG
Previously exhibited at the Venice Biennale as an artist, Han was drawn to fashion as he was driven by a desire to create work that can touch more people. He decided to launch Self-Portrait - a moniker that reflects the women for whom he designs, with the sole aim to create beautiful clothes that would make women feel special.
In 2018, Self-Portrait's first flagship store opened on Albemarle Street in London. Working with Casper Mueller Kneer Architects, the design of the store manifests Self-Portrait’s notion that quality experience and modern luxury should be accessible to all. In 2022, self-portrait proudly opened a second location in its hometown of London, with a store on the King's Road in the heart of Chelsea.
Further stand-alone stores with the same concept subsequently opened in Bangkok, Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Taipei, Hong Kong and Macau, establishing the brand's global reach.
In less than 10 years Self-Portrait has been able to build a strong creative language, and a very loyal customer and community. Aside from starting and building the business, at the heart of its value, we are committed to investing in the next generation of creative talent. Through a 5-year Central Saint Martin’s scholarship programme, the brand is able to provide mentorship and financial aid to students on the MA Fashion course.
At Self-Portrait, we are making a conscious effort to improve our contributions to reducing our impact on the environment by utilising more responsibly sourced fibres in our collections.
